Recipes

Here you’ll find some free recipes to help make first bite the right bite.

Puree

Purees saved in small portions are a great way to introduce your baby to solids as you can save time by pre-preparing a variety of foods and storing them in the freezer. They can also save you money as you can use seasonal foods which are usually cheaper. It also reduces waste as you don’t have to open a large jar or pouch and then discard the unused portion if it is not eaten within the next few days.

Here are two of the basic purees contained in my e-book.  Once your baby has tried and accepted each of these purees you might like to mix them together to make a more nutrient dense meal.

Green Pea Puree

Ingredients:

250g frozen peas

Method:

  • Place peas in microwave steamer.

  • Add a ½ cup of water

  • Cook on high for 5 minutes.

  • Strain and retain water

  • Blend peas until smooth, add some leftover steaming water to make into a puree

  • Spoon into ice cube trays, cover and freeze for up to 3 months.

Chicken Puree

Ingredients:

1 boneless skinless chicken breast fillet

1 Tablespoon Nutritional Yeast mixed into 1 cup water

OR 1 cup water OR 1 cup Maggie Beer Chicken or Vegetable Stock

(I recommend the Maggie Beer brand of liquid stock as it contains a minimal amount of sodium compared to other commercial low salt liquid stock).  Too much sodium can put a strain on an infant’s kidneys.

Method:

  • Cut chicken breast in small 5cm pieces.

  • Pour over water OR stock.

  • Bring to boil, then turn down heat and put lid on.

  • Simmer for 10-15 minutes until chicken is cooked through.

  • Remove chicken and transfer to blender.

  • Blend the chicken adding leftover water from the saucepan to bring to puree consistency.

  • Spoon into ice cube trays, cover and freeze for up to 3 months

Date and Walnut Biscuits

Once your baby has progressed to finger foods, these biscuits are good to have on hand.  They are easy to prepare, can be stored in the freezer and have no added sugar.  They are more nutritious than highly processed store bought baby biscuits.

Ingredients:

150g Pitted Dates

1/2 cup Walnuts (or other tree nut such as almonds)

1 Egg

1/2 cup Canola Oil

1 Cup Wholemeal Flour

1/2 Teaspoon cinnamon

(Allergens, treenuts, egg, wheat)

Method:

  • Heat oven to 160°C and line a large baking tray with baking paper.

  • Place dates in a heatproof bowl and cover with boiling water for 20 minutes.

  • Beat egg and oil together in a small bowl.

  • Place wholemeal flour into a large bowl.

  • Process the nuts in a blender until finely ground then pour into the wholemeal flour and mix.

  • Remove the dates from the water and place in blender with 1/4 cup of the leftover water. Blend until dates are finely chopped or a smooth paste, either is ok.

  • Add the date paste to the flour and nuts, together with the egg, oil and cinnamon.

  • Mix together with a wooden spoon until well combined. Roll into approximately 15 small balls and place on the baking tray, then lighly flatten them with the palm of your hand.

  • Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove and cool on a wire rack.

  • Store in a container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze in a zip lock bag or tupperware container for up to 3 months.
